Market news 23 05 2009
Indian markets ended choppy session on a higher note Friday led by gains in capital goods and bankingstocks.
Rebound in the European markets helped the market to gain momentum in the afternoon. National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 4233.15, up 22.25 points or 0.53 per cent.
The index touched an intra-day high of 4249.50 and low of 4155.85. Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 13869.92, up 133.38 points or 0.97 per cent.
The 30-share index hit a high of 13936.93 and low of 13611.30. BSE Midcap Index closed 1.73 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index ended 3.28 per cent higher. Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 2.79 per cent, BSE Healthcare Index moved up 1.94 per cent and BSE Bankex advanced 1.64 per cent.
Reliance Capital (4.98%), Larsen & Toubro (4.58%), Suzlon Energy (4.53%), Axis Bank(4.1%) and ICICI Bank (4%) were the biggest gainers in the 30-share index. GAIL (-4.17%), Sterlite Industries (-4.68%), Mahindra & Mahindra (-3.77%), Tata Motors (-3.33%) and ONGC (-3.3%) ended with losses. Market breadth on BSE remained positive with 2125 advances against 606 declines.
